The plentiful lilacs and apple trees at the inn are just beginning to blossom. Soon the air will be full of their intoxicating fragrances and vases of the bounteous purple lilacs will adorn the inn. So, come and experience spring all over again in Duluth. A new sign of spring to us this year was the discovery of ramps (wild leeks) growing "rampant" in the woods of Duluth. Our son, Peter, visiting home last weekend was elated to find them as he knew what a great delicacy they are. We have not included them in breakfast yet, but perhaps by special request we'll add some tasty sauteed ramps to your featherbed eggs!
The unprecedented summer-like weather in Duluth this week has tricked us into forgetting about the large 40 plus degree body of water lurking just down the hill. We were reminded yesterday as morning temps of 70 and a promise of 80 suddenly turned to mid-50's as a little breeze blew up off the lake. Our built in natural air conditioning. In fact, I was just thinking that we'd better get the window air conditioners in. Well, maybe next week.
The hot new restaurant in town is The Duluth Grill, formerly an unassuming Embers chain establishment. We have eaten their twice this week already (and the week is not yet over!). They strive to buy local, serve organic, fair trade and provide many gluten-free and vegetarian options. And, the low prices are amazing! I look longing at the desert menu every time, but alas, their generous portions make desert impossible. We may be there tonight for the Friday special fish fry, with options of fried or broiled walleye or broiled salmon with a maple glaze. Check out their website www.duluthgrill.com and see for yourself.
