Park Point's several mile long sandy beach beckoned today as the temps reached the low 80's and whispy white clouds painted the Lake Superior blue skies. With three free hours mid-afternoon we set out optimistically wearing swimsuits, books and towels packed, and eager golden retrievers in tow. And, as it turned out, it was indeed a glorious afternoon. We've jumped into summer with a couple brief swims in the cool, refreshing water, pallid winter skin shocked into tans (hopefully not sunburns) and library books assaulted with shaking wet dogs and beach sand. Weather forecasts look to be projecting the same for several days and we hope for many more after that!
Fourth of July festivities are gearing up this weekend with live music down at Bayfront Park on the 4th. The Duluth Superior Symphony will once again be performing and setting the stage for the start of Duluth's spectacular firework display over the St. Louis Bay. Let's hope the timing is better this year as last year's grand 1812 Overture was cut quite short as the fireworks began booming shortly after the opening bars and we were soon attempting to play in the dark amidst the cacaphony. Markand, our fearless leader, relentlessly beat on and yelled out measure numbers until finally admitting defeat, threw his baton and stormed off the stage. I am not playing this year.
